NOT WORTH YOUR TIME
14 Blades starts to go wrong right from the credits. The imagery is a collage of slow motion, blurred motion, whip pans, jump cuts and so on. When you get to the so-called “action,” it’s more of the same. Everything is wire work in closeup, with no moves completed, edited with a Cuisinart. Why hire a talented martial artist like Donnie Yen if we don’t get to see his moves? It’s all a crashing bore.
Too bad — the premise held much promise.
Orphans are kidnapped and trained to be a secret and elite fighting force for the emperor. This is a two-edged sword. If the politicians directing their actions are righteous, they are defenders of the people. Otherwise, they are jackbooted thugs.
There could be a lot of drama in how members of the elite fighting force slowly awaken to the reality that they are being used for evil purposes.
I’ll never know because 14 Blades was so unwatchable, I gave up after twenty minutes or so.
